22nd Conference on Isoprenoids

Prague, Czech Republic, September 7—10, 2014

22nd Conference on Isoprenoids was held on September, 7-10th, 2014 in Prague (Czech Republic) organized by the Czech Chemical Society together with the Phytochemical Society of Europe, the Institute of Chemical Technology, Prague, the Institute of Bioorganic chemistry HAS of Belarus (Minsk) and renewed its work after 9 year interval.

Conference on Isoprenoids was regularly held in Poland and Czech Republic, and further it will be taken place under the name “Conference on Isoprenoids: Chemistry, Biology and Application”.

In work of the Conference there were taken part representatives of the scientific schools of Europe, America and Asia - over 140 scientists, researching in the field of chemistry, technology, pharmacology of isoprenoids.

In order to discuss to be presented 56 oral and 57 poster presentations.

The scientific program of the Conference was opened by the known scientist, professor Giovanni Appendino (Universita del Piemonte Orientale, Novara, Italy), made the presentation on new approaches in chemistry of natural cannabinoids.

The plenary lecture on the stereochemical control in the natural products synthesis (by the example of solanoeclepin A molecule on Wittig rearrangement) was presented by professor Minoru Isobe (National Tsing Hua University, Taiwan). Lecture of professor Anthony P. Davis (University of Bristol, Great Britain) has been devoted to the supramolecular chemistry. The lecture on properties of brassinosteroid at the plasma membrane was presented by professor Vadim V. Demidchik (Belarusian State University, Minsk).

Professor Harro Bouwmeester from Wageningen University, the Netherlands devoted his presentation to biosynthesis studying strigolactones, being hormonal regulators for growth of plants.

Professor Douglas F. Covey (Washington University in St. Louis School of Medicine, the USA) has presented the results of synthesis of oxysterol alkyne analogue of 20(S)- hydroxcholesterol and also neurosteroid are of interest as potential anesthetics and drugs for treatment of epilepsy, psychiatric diseases.

The Russian Academy of Sciences was presented by scientists of Novosibirsk Institute of Organic Chemistry named by N.N. Vorozhtsov: professor Alexey Tkachev made presentation on secondary metabolites of isoprenoid origin in Siberian plants, professor Konstantin Volcho and Nariman Salakhutdinov with presentation on modification ofpara-menthane monoterpenoids.

From the Kazakhstan School of Chemistry of Natural Compounds, the presentation, devoted dimeric sesquiterpene lactones, their distribution in nature, biological activity and search on their basis of new compounds, was made by professor Sergazy M. Adekenov (International research and production holding “Phytochemistry”, Karaganda).

Presentation of professor Liliya Nikitina from the Kazan State Medical University (Kazan, the Russian Federation) was devoted to stereochemical researches of sulfur-containing monoterpenoids molecules.

Participants of the Conference were interest in the presentation of professor S0ren Br0gger Christensen (University of Copenhagen, Denmark) on targeting antitumoral preparation thapsigargin based on guaianolide from endemic plant Thapsia garganica growing in island Corsica (Spain).

Lecture of Adriaan J. Minnaard (Stratingh Institute for Chemistry, University of Groningen, the Netherlands) was devoted to catalytic asymmetric synthesis of isoprenoids with quaternary carbon centers.

Professor Mourino Mosquera Antonio (Universidad de Santiago de Compostela, Spain) presented the results of total synthesis of 1a,25-Dihydroxyvitamin D3 and its analogs.

The plenary lecture of doctor Ludger A. Wessjohann (Leibniz Institute of Plant Biochemistry, Germany) was devoted to new ways of discovery and synthesis of biologically active isoprenoids.

Professor Jadwiga Frelek from Institute of Organic Chemistry of the Polish Academy of Sciences (Warsaw, Poland) devoted his lecture to application of circular dichroism in stereochemical studies of enones.

The lecture, devoted to exploring the reactivity of steroids bearing spiroketal side chains, was presented by professor Martin Andres-Iglesias Arteaga from Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico (Mexico).

Professor Satyajit D. Sarker (John Moores University, Liverpool, United Kingdom) made presentation devoted to chemistry and bioactivity of sesquiterpenoids from plants of genus Polygonum.

The lecture of professor Karel Slama (Institute of Entomology of the Czech Academy of Sciences, Prague, the Czech Republic), called the discussion about a role of ecdysteron as insect juvenile hormone, was interesting. Thus the lecturer presented a challenging idea that ecdysteroids are not insect moulting hormones.

The lecture of professor Vladimir N. Zhabinskii (Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry (Minsk) was devoted to synthesis of steroids possessing an asymmetric center at C-25 atom.

Important aspects of isolation of new isoprenoids, their identification, chemical synthesis, biosynthesis and metabolism of compounds of this class, their biological activity, and also actual question of chemical ecology and phytochemistry were discussed at conference.

22nd Conference on Isoprenoids was held at high scientific level that allows hoping for origin of the new scientific contacts, stimulating further development of chemistry of natural compounds, strengthening of scientific cooperation and partnership of the scientific different countries.

Participants of conference have made the decision on the organization of the International Society on Isoprenoids. President of this Society was elected professor Wicha Jerzy (Institute of Organic Chemistry of Academy of Sciences of Poland, Warsaw), secretary - professor Pavel Drasar (the Czech Chemical Society, Czech Republic, Prague).
