About the status of the Karaganda Botanical Garden

The Karaganda Botanical Garden is a unique territory of scientific, educational and ecological significance both for Karaganda and for the whole of Kazakhstan.

JSC "Research and Production Centre "Phytochemistry" expresses sincere gratitude to the residents of Karaganda, representatives of the scientific community and all concerned citizens who are united in an effort to preserve the Karaganda Botanical Garden. We fully share the concerns of society and do everything possible to preserve the territory and restore its status.

Currently, active cooperation is underway with government agencies and nature conservation experts to secure the botanical garden's status as a specially protected natural area.

For 30 years now, the preservation of the Karaganda Botanical Garden has been a priority for JSC "Research and Production Centre "Phytochemistry".

JSC Phytochemistry has repeatedly raised the issue of developing the garden. Thus, in partnership with the Akimat of the city of Karaganda, the Corporate Fund for the Development of the Karaganda Botanical Garden was created, which also included the Council of Botanical Gardens of Siberia and the Far East, the Kazakh Research Institute of Forestry and Agroforestry, and the Institute of Botany and Phytointroduction. The main goal of the Fund is the reconstruction of the Karaganda Botanical Garden and the creation of a research facility on its basis for the study and collection of new plant species. Currently, due to the lack of funding, the activities of the Fund have been suspended.

At the initiative of JSC "Research and Production Centre "Phytochemistry", work has been underway since February 2023 to assign the garden the status of a specially protected natural area of national significance. Thus, JSC Phytochemistry sent an official request to the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Republic of Kazakhstan with a proposal to include the land plots of the Karaganda Botanical Garden in the list of specially protected natural areas of national significance.

In May 2023, on the instructions of the Deputy Prime Minister of the Republic of Kazakhstan, this issue was considered by the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources. The Ministry indicated that, according to the legislation of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the decision to create or expand such a territory is made on the basis of scientific and economic justifications that have received the approval of an environmental assessment. As part of the work mentioned above, JSC Phytochemistry has already received commercial proposals and prepared an estimate of costs for the development of the necessary documentation. JSC Phytochemistry is currently awaiting a decision from the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Republic of Kazakhstan on the allocation of funds for the development of justifications and the conduct of the relevant examination.

JSC "Research and Production Centre "Phytochemistry" considers the preservation of the Karaganda Botanical Garden a priority task, directly related to ensuring environmental safety, the development of science and the education of future generations. We are confident that through the joint efforts of the state, scientific circles and civil society, it will be possible to find a solution that will allow preserving and developing the Karaganda Botanical Garden as an essential centre of environmental education, science and culture.
